Ann Boland donates defibrillator to Corpus Christi Primary School

Last week, the pupils and staff of Corpus Christi Primary School, Moyross were delighted to receive the donation of a defibrillator from the inspirational St. Mary’s Park native, Ann Boland, on Tuesday, November 22, 2016.

This is the tenth establishment that has Anne has donated a defibrillator to since she tragically lost her only son David to an asthma attack eleven years ago when he was only 14.

Since then, Ann has dedicated her time to donating defibrillators to establishments such as schools, sports clubs and youth centres across the city.

Ann explains how she started this, “in memory of her son and that if it even saves one life it is worth it.”

After the tragedy, the Boland family set about raising awareness and they held a fundraiser in the Moose Bar with the proceeds going to the Asthma Association. It was after this that they started raising money for defibrillators.

The Corpus Christi Primary School has expanded in the past six years and is now home to around 290 students and 40 staff members, so this defibrillator couldn’t have come at a better and much needed time.

Ann has previously provided defibrillators for St Mary’s Rugby Club, Star Rovers, St Patrick’s Boys School, Thomond RFC and St. Gabriels School in Dooradoyle, to name a few.

The money that goes towards purchasing this life-saving equipment is fundraised by Ann by holding various events such as bingo and quizzes.

“Bingo is the most popular type of fundraiser we do, with on occasion, people generously donating spot prizes, it really attracts a crowd,” Ann explains.

“A defibrillator costs around €2,000, but a price can’t be put on a life and this machinery is truly invaluable for years to come for all those who receive it.”
