Aoife Potter-Cogan and friends take on the May 50K for Multiple Sclerosis Ireland

This week marked the beginning of the May 50K campaign in support of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland (MS Ireland), and a group of friends joined Limerick’s Aoife Potter-Cogan at the 2026 Regeneron Great Limerick Run to help get their fundraising underway.

The purpose of the MS May 50k month is to fundraise for MS Ireland to help with the treatment and management of Multiple Sclerosis for those living with MS in Ireland, but also to inform people about the challenges of MS patients.

MS is a disease that affects people in a huge variety of ways. 50km walking would be a simple thing for many people, but with MS, many people struggle to do simple tasks or might be able to walk a mile today, then suffer with fatigue tomorrow. It’s important that people are informed about the broad and varied challenges of the disease.

Aoife Potter-Cogan told I Love Limerick, “ May marks the May 50K, which is a very important month for raising funds for MS Ireland. But also, Limerick is about to get the first-ever fully resourced building for people living with MS in Ireland. It will have a full gym, all the sports services that you need, so it’s a really exciting time.”

2026 marks the opening of MS Mid West Centre in Limerick with its innovative plans for an adapted gym for people with Physical challenges, to therapists and community support workers, all under one roof. This will be the first of its kind in Ireland, and it’s great to see this innovation finding its home in Limerick.

Dr Susan Coote, MS Ireland’s Exercise and Physiotherapy Co-ordinator and Aoife Potter-Cogan, review the architectural plans for the new centre

Aoife, encouraging people to support the May 50K fundraiser, said, “ You can donate through themay50k.ie, and you’ll see all the different fundraisers there; you can donate to whichever fundraiser you want to support. So my name is Aoife Potter-Cogan, if you want to donate to mine.”

There are approximately 11,000 people in Ireland living with multiple sclerosis, and it’s MS Ireland’s mission to “leave MS where it belongs, behind us”. This year, MS Ireland has teamed up with the MS International Federation for the May 50K.

In Ireland 70% of the money you raise will go to MS Ireland projects and 30% you raise helps the MS International Federation rally the global community to prevent, treat and stop MS, improve access to treatment and support projects around the world.
