New mental health resource Ar Sceal, which will provide creative therapeutic activities, opened at the Creative Centre on February 26. 

New mental health resource Ár Scéal opened at the Music Generation Creative Centre

Ár Scéal is a new creative mental health resource at the Music Generation Creative Centre, in the heart of the city, and it was officially opened by Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, James Collins on Tuesday, February 26. Hosted by the Music Generation Creative Centre on Cecil Street, space has been designed to facilitate creative therapeutic work.

The aim is to provide participants with the ability to move between such activities as performance, skills building, composition, exploration, musical wellbeing, and therapeutic options without the need for multiple referrals between different agencies.

The mayor was joined at the event by Paul Patton, Director of Further Education and Training Services at the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board and representatives from the worlds of politics, education, culture and mental health. Live music was provided by pianist Aine Doolan and rap artists Godknows, Jonas and Murli Boevi.

Music Generation Limerick City Co-ordinator Boris Hunka said, “This is a unique opportunity to bring together these connected strands into a practical, real-world model. 

The project works with a range of partnerships and is actively working to build further connections with arts and mental health organisations and practitioners across the region. The set up has been made possible with support from the LCETB Active Learning fund (which provided much of the multi-sensory equipment), LCETB FET division and Music Generation Limerick City who are project managing the initiative.”

Music Generation Limerick City was initiated in 2013 as part of Music Generation, Ireland’s National Music Education Programme. They transform the lives of children and young people through access to high-quality performance music education in their locality. Through the partnership, they create rich and diverse ways for participants to engage in vocal and instrumental tuition delivered by skilled professional musicians, across all musical genres and styles.

They have since been involved with various events and organisations. In June of last year, Music Generation teamed up with Limerick Youth Services for a Limerick Summer Creative Arts Music Programme that provided young people with the chance to learn some new skills and even record their own song with the help of experienced musicians and youth workers.
