OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAround the World in 80 Minutes (The Creative Show) promises to be a roller coaster ride which will take you to parts of the world you have never seen from the comfort of your own seat at The Lime Tree Theatre on 30 & 31 March. This family show is the brain child of Limerick Youth Theatre and the Daughters of Charity service, Limerick, in collaboration with Transition Year students from Laurel Hill Coláiste Choir and song writers from Music Generation. Writer and director Myles Breen and choreographer Angie Smalis do their magic to showcase the talents of more than 120 performers (dancers, singers, actors and musicians) under the guidance and kind support of over 30 professional crew, volunteers and carers.

Penned by Myles Breen, this fast paced comic piece is set in a world where Jules Verne’s classic tale meets The Hunger Games. There are three teams: The Blue Bottles; The Black Bulls and The Red Robins who will compete to become the Around the World champions. In 80 minutes, the audience is transported to over 15 countries. They meet talking penguins, Skippy the Kangaroo, El Fuego the Mexican jalapeno and some celebrity guests like Queen Elizabeth, Tom Cruise and ABBA make their appearance. Only one of the teams can be crowned champion, join us at the Lime Tree Theatre on 30 & 31 March at 8.00pm to find out who it is.

Angie Smalis, Artistic Director of LYT and choreographer of the show commented; ‘I am absolutely thrilled that LYT (Limerick Youth Theatre) and DOC (Daughters of Charity Service, Limerick) are able to produce The Creative Show for the fifth year. The successful partnership continues to involve Myles Breen in his capacity as writer and director, Marie Boylan and Mags O’Donoghue as production managers and Orla Colgan of Laurel Hill Coláiste Choir as choral director. This year, The Creative Show is welcoming Music Generation Limerick (MG), a new and exciting addition to the project.

More than 120 DOC service users and LYT members will be on stage showcasing their acting, dancing, singing and live music skills with an additional 30 Transition Year students from Laurel Hill Coláiste Choir and Music Generation Limerick music makers. Those who are stage shy are making props, building sets, assisting the director and choreographer and stage managing to create this hugely entertaining variety show.  LYT members have taken the roles of sound, costume and set design. The project exposes the talents of many young adults while raising awareness about artists with intellectual disabilities and social innovation. My greatest hope is to continue to enrich all participants’ lives and their experiences of the performing arts.’

Donal Sherlock from the DOC said; ‘Over the past five years, the successful collaboration between DOC and LYT in OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAthe development of the Creative Show has proved a powerful key in opening doors to social inclusion. The essence of this collaboration has always been to provide a platform that showcases each individual’s unique talents and abilities while taking into account the capacities of individuals and the diversity of their needs. The Creative Show provides the perfect learning environment for supporting the holistic development of each individual, fostering a mutual appreciation and understanding of each other’s differences.

Working this year with LYT, Laurel Hill and Music Generation has allowed us to both build bridges and strengthen our sense of community. It has also nurtured an environment of inclusion, respect, and social cohesion. This collaboration provides all involved with a rich model of friendship and family, where all are encouraged to make a full contribution and most importantly to enjoy each other’s company. It is my hope that the collaboration will continue to flourish, and make a positive contribution to people lives.’
