Organiser of the exhibition Kathy Tiernan said “We chose Little Catherine Street because of the atmosphere, we were there for 5 weeks last July and you couldn’t meet nicer people.  The street is small enough to be cosy, taking your time is important. The coffee shops Olio & Farina, Melt and others are so close, so we have a ready supply of cuppas!”

Limerick Art is a group of artists who had the desire and passion to build a community and promote local artists by showcasing their work. High quality original artwork in oil, watercolour, acrylic and fine art prints are all featured in their exhibitions throughout the year.

The community of artists has grown from a handful when it was first formed 3 years ago to almost 100 artists who come from all walks of life and many different countries.  “We have ages from Leaving Cert to long retired.  We have artists from all over Europe, along with Africa, Taiwan and Brazil.  You couldn’t get a more inclusive medium, because we don’t need to speak, so we never stop conversing.” said Kathy. “We would love to see more spaces available to artists.  I personally find that although we have a great art college, students are often nurtured until the final year and they don’t have the tools to make a business of their art.

Art Limerick’s work has been on display to the public many times since its creation, finding different places across the city to showcase their art. “There are only so many walls in Limerick and they are often reserved for so few. Caseys Furniture in Raheen are very supportive of our group, they allow us to display art on their wall, we switch the display every 2 months.  Green Yard Cafe are also fabulous at hosting exhibitions in the covered courtyard.

The group’s original aim of ‘Art for All is quickly gaining ground in Limerick and their numbers are rising each year. Last May, visitors to Riverfest were blown away with artwork presented by the team at the town markets, which acted as a great opportunity for the group to gain regocnition with new people.  “Riverfest was a total blast!” said Kathy, adding “What constantly surprises me is that each artist will pack their car, arrive on time, and stand with a smile all day. Nobody complains, they talk and compare stories.  Visitors came over the bridge for the big wheel, but they stayed for the chat.”

For those thinking of joining the group, Kathy says “As an artist they can expect support, as it’s not easy displaying your work. You paint from the heart and whenever you show work to the public it reveals a little of your soul. That is no mean task. Art is often a solitary effort, so it’s great to take part in something where you meet like-minded people. I find that artists have a room full of paintings at home, or a box full of drawings, it’s never going to get legs and sell itself, so a little encouragement goes a long way.

Limerick Art’s gallery can be found on their website, which hopes to provide art buyers, designers and lovers of original art with a connection to each artist through their individual page. Whether you are looking for a new exhibition to visit, some inspiration for a unique wedding gift or perhaps a wow factor in a new room design, Limerick Art could have what you’re looking for.
