Limerick City and County Council announce the energy upgrade and associated flood defence works have now commenced at Askeaton Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre

The works, being undertaken by Martins Construction Ltd. will include the upgrading of the plant room, replacement of the mechanical and electrical equipment and the installation of energy-efficient heating systems along with minor capital works. These improvements will minimise any future risk of the resource being closed to the public, due to flooding in the area and also reduce the day-to-day operational costs.
The leisure centre is owned by Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC, the shareholders of which are Limerick City and County Council and Askeaton Swimming Club. The facility includes a 25m swimming pool, a children’s pool, changing village, a sauna, and gym. It is anticipated that the works will be completed in early 2025, enabling the reopening of this popular West Limerick sport and recreational facility to the public.
Limerick City and County Council have been awarded grants totalling €1,265,750.00 from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, under the Large Scale Sports Capital Programme in the amounts of €619,091 (December 2023) and €646,659 (Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) 2021. The Council has committed to meeting the balance of funds from its own resources.
Askeaton Swimming Club reacted to the announcement on Facebook, saying, “We are delighted to announce that Martins Construction will be on-site at the pool in the morning, this is a long-awaited development. We are thrilled with developments, and look forward to all enjoying the Leisure Centre again.”
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is welcoming the commencement of works and the target for reopening, saying, “The Council and the Board of Askeaton Pool & Leisure DAC is delighted to have the contractor on site to complete this very worthwhile sporting and recreational projqpect.

“The financial support of Limerick City and County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund and Sports Capital Programmes has been vital to ensure its delivery. It is welcome to hear that the works have commenced, and I look forward to visiting to review progress on my next trip to Askeaton.
“The re-opening of the centre, will enable the citizens of West Limerick and the wider region to participate in a range of recreational and water-based activities, thus promoting health and wellbeing within the entire community.”
