A new large residential development has been approved by Clare County Council, just a short distance from Limerick City, where more than 100 new homes are set to be built in the Westbury area.

The proposed development includes 101 residential units made up of 52 apartments with a mixture of 28 one-bed and 24 two-bed units and a further 43 terraced three-bed houses and six three-bed semi-detached houses.

Permission has been granted on a 2.84 hectare site near the Corbally Road in Knockballynameath, Athlunkard, County Clare with the highlighted site north of the Westbury Shopping Centre and the existing Carraig Midhe estate road.

Although the site is in close proximity to Limerick City, the development lies within the environs of Clare County Council.

The plans include 156 car parking spaces with access available through the existing Carraig Midhe estate road. Other features of the development will see the inclusion of bin storage facilities, bicycle parking, and the project has been granted permission of a 10-year period

The site is currently unoccupied and has no history of flooding or previous planning applications. It will connect to public mains water and sewer systems.

Included in the development is the provision of 10 units under Part V of the Planning and Development Act for social and affordable housing.

The current Part V legislation provides for local authorities to acquire 20 per cent of this land at existing use value and to utilise this land to deliver homes to those households who qualify for social and affordable housing support.
