Following the outreach work by the Dillon Quirke Foundation over the summer, Ballinacurra Gaels hope to give back to the charity by raising funds at a fun table quiz on Thursday, October 23.

In summer 2025, almost fifty young sports players received free cardiac screening at Ballinacurra Gaels clubhouse in the heart of Limerick City, thanks to the work of the Dillon Quirke Foundation.

Players aged 13 years and older from Ballinacurra Gaels hurling and football teams, along with other young people from neighbouring GAA and other sports clubs were checked for cardiac issues in a bid to prevent Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

Dillon Quirke was just 24 years old when he collapsed and died while playing the sport he loved in 2022. He was young, fit, and seemingly healthy but he lost his life to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS), an often silent condition that claims the lives of two young people every week in Ireland. Determined that no other family should suffer the same heartbreak, Dillon’s family set up the Dillon Quirke Foundation to protect young athletes through life-saving cardiac screening.

Now Ballinacurra Gaels want to give back to the Dillon Quirke Foundation by getting together at a fun table quiz. All proceeds from the night will go to fund the charity’s work to raise awareness of SADS, to make cardiac screening a right for young athletes, and to prevent more families from experiencing the tragedy of losing a child or loved one to SADS.

Maria Donoghue, Vice Chairperson and U14 Ladies Gaelic Football Manager, who was instrumental in bringing the Dillon Quirke Foundation to Ballinacurra Gaels, said, “We were aware of the National Screening Programme launched by the Dillon Quirke Foundation in 2024 and wanted our players to be counted among the more than 19,000 young people who have been screened to date. We were so lucky to have had the Dillon Quirke Foundation team visit our club last June, and we are keen to pay it forward.”

Ballinacurra Gaels was founded in 1979 to meet the sporting needs of the young people in Ballinacurra and surrounding areas of Limerick City. Well established in its community, Ballinacurra Gaels has forged links with other sports clubs in the area and with the local residents’ associations as well as with Munster Wheelchair Hurling, Limerick City Partnership, Dochas and Mary Immaculate College.

The Table Quiz will take place on Thursday, October 23rd at 7.30pm in Young Munster RFC. The host on the night will be Dan Mooney, sports commentator and novelist, who might just have to swap the black and amber of his beloved Young Munsters for the black and amber of Ballinacurra Gaels, well for one night anyway!

Tables of four can be booked in advance on Eventbrite
