Ballyhoura Country Spring Programme launched for all outdoor enthusiasts

With the first full flush of Spring, Ballyhoura Country is getting into gear by launching an active spring programme. Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to take to the trails by foot or on two wheels, get active and learn about the world around you in a varied series of events taking place in February.

If the outdoor life sounds appealing, there are several ways to get involved. The 9th Biking Blitz is taking over the Ballyhoura’s on February 24. The cross-country mountain bike event has categories for all levels and ages of competitor.  The public is also invited this weekend to join the Social Scavenger Hunt taking place on February 16, for an afternoon of fun and games in Glenosheen Woods. Compete in groups to find as many of the scavenger items as you can, where the focus is on making new friends. Pre-booking is essential at  [email protected] to book places.

Spin South West and Classic Hits FM presenter, Louise Cantillon, and Limerick Senior Hurler, Declan Hannon, teamed up with Ballyhoura Country to launch this spring programme.

“I highly recommend a trip to Limerick’s hidden gem in the Ballyhoura Mountains. It’s such a peaceful retreat regardless of the weather,” said Louise. “There’s nothing nicer than looking out the window at the beautiful view in front of an open fire, and waking up for a morning hike on your doorstep”, said Louise of their stay at the Ballyhoura Mountain Lodges and subsequent exploration of the hiking loops in the area.

Ballyhoura Country is renowned for its wild beauty, and the couple were treated to dramatic views and even some snow as they took to the trails. Starting from the Trailriders depot in Ardpatrick, Louise and Declan proved themselves up to the challenge by hiking the Blackrock Trailhead.

Also taking place this month is the Glenbrohane Fun Run on February 17. The Fun Run is in aid of The Local Hub Project, Glenbrohane. It sets off from Glenbrohane Church at 12 pm with tickets are available on Eventbrite. On February 19, you can find out what makes a Super full moon special with a fun, interactive presentation. Following the presentation weather permitting there will be a short moon viewing walk.

Operation Transformation is taking over Ballyhoura Country and the first walk of the year in January lead by local OT leader Jean Tierney saw 1,500 people attend. The walk was part of the Nationwide Operation Transformation walks, taking place in over 80 venues across the country. A second “Step into Spring” 5km walk with Limerick Sport’s Partnership in conjunction with Ballyhoura Beo will take place at Lough Gur on Saturday the 23rd of February starting at the Lough Gur Heritage Centre at 11 am.
