More than 500 people took to the roads of Ballylanders last Sunday for the hugely successful inaugural Run Against Cancer event, creating an unforgettable day of community spirit, generosity, and support for a very worthy cause.
Participants from Ballylanders and surrounding communities gathered bright and early to take part in both the 10km run and the 5km run/walk, with people of all ages and abilities proudly crossing the finish line throughout the morning. The atmosphere in the village was electric, as families, runners, walkers, volunteers, and supporters lined the streets to cheer participants on.
The event, organised by Andrew and a dedicated local committee in association with the Rua Running community group based in Ballylanders, was created to bring the community together while raising much-needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Rua Running continues to grow in popularity locally and welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities to its weekly meet-up every Saturday morning at 9am in Ballylanders.
Thanks to the incredible support shown on the day, organisers are delighted to announce that a remarkable €6,100 was raised for the charity.
Speaking after the event, organiser Andrew said, “What we witnessed in Ballylanders on Sunday was truly special. The community came together with one common goal — to support people and families affected by cancer. Seeing over 500 people take part in our very first event was incredibly emotional and inspiring. This was more than just a run; it was a celebration of community, hope, and togetherness.”

Organisers extended sincere thanks to everyone who participated, donated, volunteered, or supported the event in any way.
A special word of appreciation was given to sponsors Arachas Insurance and Peak 100 Coffee for their valued support, as well as the many volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the event ran smoothly from start to finish.
“We want to thank everyone who came out and supported us,” added Andrew. “From the runners and walkers to the volunteers, sponsors, local businesses, stewards, and supporters along the route — every single person played a part in making this event truly special.”
Following the overwhelming success of the first-ever Run Against Cancer, plans are already underway for an even bigger and better event in 2027, with organisers hoping to build on the momentum and make it an annual highlight for the community.
Sunday’s event proved that when a community comes together, incredible things can happen — and Ballylanders certainly showed its heart.
