This unique concert promises a captivating fusion of virtuoso performance and collaborative participation, showcasing a brand-new composition by the maestro of participatory music, Brian Irvine, conducting 50 young musicians from across Limerick (GET INVOLVED↓).
For the debut production in Limerick, Brian Irvine will join as a special guest delivering workshops and conducting the participants on the night of the concert.
Led by renowned percussionists Alex Petcu, Emma King, Caitríona Frost, Brian Dungan, John Rousseau-Parlane and Paddy Nolan, the Bangers and Crash Percussion Sextet not only showcases a spectacular array of percussion instruments – including marimbas, vibraphones, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, tambourines, gongs and a vast array of drums from around the world – but also captivates audiences with their creative use of ad hoc materials like scrap metal and household materials, pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration and crafting a mesmerizing fantasia of percussion sonorities.
The concerts promise a captivating evening of sensory ambient percussion with a repertoire inspired by diverse genres ranging from contemporary Western percussion and Afro-Cuban, to Japanese taiko, Spanish flamenco, and Javanese gamelan.
As well as Brian Irvine’s new work, the concert will feature a debut performance of a new participatory composition by the group’s Musical Director Alex Petcu. Complementing these participatory works, the repertoire will also include: Music for Pieces of Wood by Steve Reich, Ghanaia by Matthias Schmitt, Catching Shadows by Ivan Trevino and Shell by Emma O’Halloran.

Bangers and Crash invites young musicians of any instrumentation and skill level to be part of this exciting concert. Over three days, running from Sunday, September 15 to Tuesday, September 17, the six master percussionists and Brian Irvine will guide participants through a captivating journey of auditory discovery and rhythmic exploration, culminating in an exciting concert.
By performing in groups, participants will contribute to the creation of a rich auditory experience, playing their learned parts from various locations around the auditorium to produce an immersive, surround-sound effect for the concert audience.
This programme is designed to provide an exciting educational experience, enhancing the participants’ skills, creativity, understanding of professional performance, and innovative music creation. All activities take place in the Lime Tree Theatre.
This unique project offers young participant musicians the opportunity to:
Discover innovative concepts of immersive and surround-sound performance that transcend traditional stage boundaries.
Be immersed in the connective power of percussion music, and explore its rich diversity and vibrant colours across various genres and cultures.
Work collaboratively with the Bangers and Crash Percussion on creating arrangements for the new compositions to be performed.
Perform with the Bangers and Crash Percussion Sextet at the Lime Tree Theatre, showcasing the collaborative work created in the workshops.
Explore percussive techniques and non-traditional instrumentation to discover innovative ways to create rhythm and texture.
Limerick participation is in partnership with: Irish Chamber Orchestra’s ICO Schools programme, Limerick School of Music and The Redemptorist Centre of Music.
