Local artist Barbara Hanley’s ‘Opening of Landmarks’ Exhibition was a great opening success at Narrative 4 on Thursday, October 24, 2019. The Narrative 4 Limerick centre hosts student engagement events and cultural activities such as a monthly storytelling night, literary readings, and masterclasses making it the perfect venue for Barbara’s wonderful landscape paintings.

Barbara Hanley is 43 years old and is originally from Killarney, co. Kerry. Barbara is a service user with the Daughters of Charity in Lisnagry. She has worked in Limerick City since 2000 in the Tait Centre, and now the Garvey Centre on John’s Street, but Barbara truest passion is art.

For the past 3 years, she has been working on drawings and paintings of local Limerick places that she loves, her favourite building in Killarney where she grew up and one of New York, where I would love to visit. This has all been possible from the art projects available at The Daughters of Charity.

The art classes and programmes range from painting to collage work, paper mache and sculptural pieces. They also do dance, drama classes, music and art therapy. Ashley Ryan, Barbara’s Art instructor said: ” she actually did draw all these herself without help, Barbara has such a unique style, it’s amazing how she can explore her talent”.

The Daughters of Charity Limerick services provide a comprehensive range of person-centred services for adults and children with intellectual disability in the East Limerick/North Tipperary HSE catchment area. Through these programmes, Barbara fell in love with art. Donal Sherlock, TEES Manager said, “Barbara came to The Tait centre as part of TEES from the training centre and worked when the group used to make art and craft pieces for sale”.

Donal said, “Barbara mastered her craft, She always had a good eye for art so and was supported by art instructor Ashley, who encouraged her to develop her own painting and drawing style. She started with landscapes and flowers from images from books, and it became clear Barbara had a unique drawing style and she really enjoyed drawing and painting. Barbara got great reactions to these drawings from peers and staff and this gave her the confidence to draw onto the canvas.”

The Daughters of Charity Disability Support Services provides supports to persons with an intellectual disability across Ireland. The Training, Enterprise and Employment Services delivers its very successful Person-Centred Programmes for a large number of service users supported by staff and operating from four different locations across Limerick. The mission, ethos and philosophy of the Service are central to the delivery of Service in TEES and the principles and guidelines referred to in the ‘New Directions’ Policy Document will be implemented.

To end the night Barabara thanked all those who came out and supported her, ” I would like to thank a few people who helped make this day possible for me, Thanks to my family for coming to see this and to all my friends for making this a great evening, Drink the wine and enjoy the art” .
