One of Ireland’s largest mass participatory events, The Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run took place on Sunday. The hugely popular run on Sunday, May 1 – the Bank Holiday weekend – and during Riverfest celebrations, attracted over 13,000 runners of various abilities, who took to O’ Connell Street on Sunday to take part in the seventh annual Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run.

Martin Doody from Caherdavin was the first to cross the finish line. Martin was the winner of the full marathon, which started at 9am. Martin crossed the finish line in just under two hours, 28 minutes and 33 seconds. Martin is the first Limerick man to win the marathon, in the seven years of its existence.

Ciara Hickey from Dublin was the first woman to cross the finish line. Ciara crossed the white line in two hours and 46 minutes. The first Limerick lady to complete the Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run was Lizzie Buggy, from Adare.

Athletes from the 13km half-marathon began to pass the finish line just after 1pm, with those completing the six-mile race beginning to arrive just after 2pm.

The six mile race was won by Kenyan national Peter Somba, 23, who completed the six miles in a time of just 29 minutes, a new personal record. Peter was shortly followed by runners supporting various Limerick charities, including the Sophie’s Journey foundation and the Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol, and Honouring Aaron.

The Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run was only one of the great events that took place in Limerick as part of the annual Riverfest festival. The run was followed by the official after party in McGettigans Irish Bar.

This year’s UL Sport Kids Run 2016 took place in the University of Limerick on Saturday, April 30, the day before The Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run. The UL Sport Kids run was help in support of Honouring Aaron.
