Inter-County Goalkeeper Barry Hennessy is taking on a big challenge next month. He’s going to run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours on Friday, March 5 and he’s looking for your support in aid of Sophie’s Journey Foundation.

Sophie’s Journey Foundation was developed by Liam and Stacey Mulcahy as a foundation in January 2015 to support families who were dealing with children with life-limiting conditions in memory of their daughter Sophie who sadly passed from kidney failure on October 23rd, 2014. This is a much-needed service during a critical time of a child’s life. The funds raised will directly go to supporting in-home care for children with life-limiting illnesses in the Limerick area.

Barry said on his Instagram, “A little last minute but I will be running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours starting 8 p.m. Friday, March 5th for Sophie’s Journey Foundation who provide financial support for children in the Limerick area with life-limiting illnesses. While I know it’s an extremely difficult time for everyone at the moment, any support or donation you can make no matter how small or insignificant you may think it may be will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way to helping support families caring for their loved ones”.

Barry will be doing the challenge in compliance with Covid Guidelines staying within 5km of his home. The challenge was started by an ex-navy seal named David Goggins and on March, 5 every year he runs this event to raise money for his own charities. This inspired Barry as he felt like it was different from the usual 5k challenge. Completing a marathon last year in Mungret Park with Liam Mulcahy, he wanted to do something a little different this year. Barry says, “Through Liam and Stacey, I have seen the impact Sophie’s story has had on other families who have children with life-limiting illnesses and the comfort it can give a family for only a brief moment.”

Barry is an ambassador for the foundation and has taken part in previous fundraising events. He is an Irish hurler who plays as a goalkeeper for club side Kilmallock and at inter-county level with the Limerick Senior Hurling Team.

Sophie inspired so many people to achieve the impossible and she was at the centre of many events that brought people together. Anyone who knew her was touched by her. Barry says, “I had the pleasure of meeting Sophie on a couple of occasions before she passed and the impact she made on the world in a short space of time is truly inspiring. People always say they would like to leave a legacy or leave a mark on the world but what that little girl did in 8 years will be more than most people do in their entire lives.” barry hennessy sophies journey
