As part of this year’s Bealtaine Festival in Limerick, Gallery 75 O’Connell Street saw the launch of their 2014 Bealtaine Festival art exhibition featuring over 70 artists. With the theme being “All About Limerick”, the exhibition showcases the idea of celebrating creativity as we age through history, sport, religion and life using varying interpretations of familiar landmarks, people and events.
Speaking to Barbara Dillon, Co-Ordinator of the programme, she tells me more about the festival; “It aims to show people the amazing artistic talent of retired people all over the country. This annual event not only celebrates the artists and their work, but this year it also celebrates Limerick as our National City of Culture.”
Guest speaker on the day, who also officially launched the exhibition, was Sr. Geraldine Brown from the Good Shepherd Convent, Limerick. She says; “It is a great privilege to hang a picture in a professional gallery, where the creme de la creme of Limerick artists have shown their work.” Sr. Geraldine goes on to say: “If we step back and take a trip down memory lane here today, we can see the whole exhibition is done by Limerick people, in Limerick, to celebrate Limerick.”
With the idea originally developed by Limerick City Active Retirement and tying in with “Treaty 300”, the exhibition celebrates the notion of togetherness through the creation of beautiful art and craftwork. Not only does the Bealtaine Festival art exhibition feature outstanding paintings, you can also see examples of quilling pictures and cards, glass-painting, as well as an extremely nostalgic life-story craft journal.
This fantastic artistic display is something which all those involved should be proud of and undoubtedly showcases the talent and creativity that comes as one ages and progresses through life.
