Limerick’s Becky Lynch recaptures the Women’s Intercontinental Championship, defeating her rival AJ Lee at Wrestlemania 42

Limerick native Becky Lynch reclaimed the Women’s Intercontinental Championship on night one of this past weekend’s WrestleMania 42.
The WWE wrestler took on her rival, AJ Lee, who marked her return to a WrestleMania for the first time in 11 years with the title fight with Lynch.
Becky Lynch overcame the champion in a hotly contested battle, which saw the Limerick entertainer become a three-time champion on the night.
The event saw some controversy around the involvement of the match referee, Jessika Carr, after Lynch removed the padding on a top turnbuckle in the match, which led to a heated exchange between the two, which escalated later on in the fight through some repeat confrontations.
Despite Lynch being in control for the early stages of the fight, the distraction from the referee led to AJ LEE capitalising on a charge from Lynch, allowing Lee to perform the ‘Manhandle Slam’ – Lynch’s signature move – on the Limerick wrestler.
It was Lynch who came out on top in the end of the battle as she pulled out a Manhandle Slam of her own before defeating AJ Lee by pinfall to be crowned Women’s Intercontinental Champion.
Following the win, Becky took to Instagram to share her excitement about having won the title in front of her daughter, Roux. She said, “Beating AJ at WrestleMania was GREAT. Outsmarting Corrupt Carr was FANTASTIC! Having my sweet baby witness history was PRICELESS!! HAHAHAHA it was a ROUX-Z! She never liked AJ!!!”
