Young Social Innovators (YSI) is a non-profit organisation that empowers young people to use their talents, insights, passion and creativity to come up with innovative solutions to social challenges. Through fun and engaging programmes, students are supported to create team-based action-projects on issues they care about, putting their innovative ideas into action to bring about positive social change for the benefit of people, communities and the environment.

The campaign was created by Bettering Beours and consists of two other Social Innovator groups from St Mary’s Secondary School in Charleville, ‘Make it Consensual’ and ‘Pozzibodies’. The groups have come together to establish a GoFundMe platform to create the Walk4Women initiative. Participants will walk 4km and then donate €5. All funds will go directly towards ADAPT to assist them in their amazing work.

The group commented, “as part of our YSI, our three groups (‘Make it Consensual’, ‘Pozzibodies’ and ‘Bettering Beours’) came together and decided to raise some money for ADAPT. ADAPT aids those who are affected by domestic abuse. As well as helping abuse victims, the organisation offers services that work with young people in the general community to promote healthy relationships which are based on equality, dignity and mutual respect. They also offer counselling services to those affected by the abuse to rebuild their confidence and self-image.”

ADAPT is a Limerick-based voluntary organisation that was founded in 1974. ADAPT has the largest refuge in the country and provides emergency accommodation for both women and children who have unfortunately found themselves in situations of domestic abuse. Adapt also offers various other services for victims of domestic abuse including a 24-hour phone line and offer accompaniment to court to seek legal protection. According to womensaid.ie 1 in 4 women in Ireland who have been in a relationship have been abused by a current or former partner.

The group also added, “Walk4Women is an initiative that we came up with to try to raise money for ADAPT. To take part, firstly, you walk 4km and donate €5. You then share a picture of you completing your walk or donating your €5 on social media. Lastly, tag 4 of your friends that you would like to nominate to take part. You can also tag us @betteringbeours on Instagram so we can see ye taking part. Every little helps so even if you are unable to complete the 4km walk, donating and sharing can still help!”
