Limerick said a heartfelt goodbye to Betty McElholm, a lady who “remained true to what was good and honourable” as the city’s oldest person passed away at the incredible age of 107 this month
A beloved and cherished member of the community, Betty McElholm (née Carroll)’s life spanned more than a century as she witnessed some of the island’s most important moments from the birth of the Irish Republic to our lives today.
On Friday, August 16th Betty’s family, friends, and neighbours gathered to celebrate her incredible life led by a beautiful ceremony by Father Chris O’Donnell in Kilmallock, a service which was the perfect tribute to a woman remembered fondly by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Betty’s nephew, Pat, and her long-time caregiver, Veronica, were among those who presented mementoes capturing the essence of her life, included in those was a mystery book and issue of Ireland’s Own, a symbol of her love for reading.
Although Betty never smoked or drank, she had a sweet tooth, and Father O’Donnell joked lovingly, “Mrs Allen was her main supplier,” as a box of her favourite sweets, Scots Clan, were brought to the alter, Mrs Allen a close friend of Betty who brought her many treats.
Flowers and bulbs were also brought to the alter, marking her love for nature and gardening, a reflection of the colour and vibrance Betty brought to the lives of all of those who knew here.
Betty was lucky in her life to see Limerick win several All-Ireland’s, 11 in the total of her life, although maybe too young to remember the 1918 and 1921 wins, her devotion to the sport of hurling was another beautiful part of her colourful personality, even having the chance to hold the Liam MacCarthy Cup when she was visited by Limerick Hurling Manager, John Kiely.
“She lived through so many advancements, both good and bad, but she always remained true to what was good and honourable,” Fr. O’Donnell said when speaking about the life Betty led.
Betty McElholm was laid to rest in Kilmallock, reunited with her late husband, Sam, her parents, and her siblings. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her memory will remain deeply cherished in the hearts of all who knew her.
