The Bicycle Engineering Academy was established in Pallasgreen, County Limerick over 35 years ago, and offers nationwide alternative education programmes to anyone looking to upskill themselves or find a pathway to a new career in Engineering, Technology or Bicycle Mechanics.

The BEA specialises in qualifying and training some of the best bicycle mechanics and electronic bicycle technicians in Europe.

At the end of the first 20 weeks of the course, learners are presented with five internationally recognised certificates in Mechanical Engineering, Computer-Aided 3D design, Business Management, Bicycle Mechanics, and Bicycle Engineering.

The BEA also offers a host of practical certifications such as Safe Pass, Manual Handling, Workshop Tools and Skills, Fire Safety, First Aid Training and Electrical Safety.

Entry requirements for the Bicycle Engineering courses are a completed Junior Certificate as proof of basic literacy skills – results received are irrelevant to the course.

BEA courses are pathway courses to university degrees in the STEM field, particularly the renewable transportation, engineering, and energy industry.

Those enrolled in the course will be put on a work experience placement and have the option of continuing into direct employment or coming back for a 20-week programme – the advanced course.

All of the skills learned in the initial 20-week programme are expanded on in the advanced course, and all certificates are upscaled. Students are given the skills and tools to build their own bicycles from scratch. Advanced course graduates will have the option of direct access into the second year of university or equivalent.

The new free programme offered by the BEA is the first of its kind in the world, due to the increasing demand for certified technicians specialising in electric bicycles and similar vehicles.

Most students enrolled in the course are also entitled to various training, travel and accommodation allowances for the duration of the course.
