In recent years, our city has made huge efforts to become a bike-friendly destination. Limerick now supports the environmentally-friendly form of transport through efficient new facilities such as bike racks, lockers, cycle lanes, and an array of bike shops.

Most importantly, Limerick offers great on and off-road infrastructure, so cyclists can enjoy commuting in the Treaty City safely.

Limerick’s excellent off-road tracks include the Great Southern Greenway, a 39km, car-free trail along the old southern railway line, connecting the towns of Rathkeale, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale.

The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails are the largest network of cycling tracks in Ireland, a combined total of 98km and including forest road climbs, tight and twisty single-tracks, boardwalks, tight turns and technical rocky areas for the more adventurous cyclist.

Limerick’s Park Canal offers a variety of routes for cyclists to enjoy on a sunny afternoon, with stunning scenery around the areas of Shannon Fields, the Corbally Baths and Guinness/ Lock Quay Bridge. The canal also offers a safer alternative route to the City Centre for cyclists and pedestrians, avoiding the busy R445 Dublin Road.

Meanwhile, the 4km on-road ‘Riverside Loop’ also takes in a host of Limerick City’s cultural and historical sites.

Bike trails in Limerick and surrounding areas are constantly being uncovered and upgraded, with new commuter ‘loops’ receiving significant investment in the coming months and years. The Limerick Canal Loop from Colbert Train Station, Bunratty Castle Loop from Shannon Town and the Killaloe Farmers Market Loop from Parteen are examples of new and developing long-distance routes.

There are cycling tracks and trails for every fitness and skill level, from professionals to families, and there is no better way to explore the beautiful county of Limerick than on the bike!
