In addition to the leadership talks, the participants have also availed of mentor sessions with a group of 20 business leaders from across the region volunteering over 180 hours of their time and experience and hosting 100 mentor meetings as part of the programme.

Bill Maher is CEO of the Bon Secours Health System, Ireland’s largest independent Hospital Group which has a network of 5 modern, JCI accredited acute hospitals. The Group has grown steadily over the last decade having reinvested €150m in upgrading and developing its facilities and technologies as part of its ambitious 2020 Plan.

These world-class medical treatment facilities are located in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Tralee, together with a Care Village in Cork and an Outreach Clinic in Cavan. The Group employs over 3,000 personnel, who, together with 410 leading consultants work in partnership to provide the highest standard of Advanced Medicine Exceptional Care to over 280,000 patients each year.

Addressing the audience, Bill Maher said: “I’m delighted to be with you all this afternoon. This is a great initiative being run by Limerick Chamber with the support of Dell EMC and the University of Limerick. Having had a long career in the health system I’ve seen first-hand many different leadership styles. From my perspective, I have found that the secret to successful leadership is open dialogue with the teams working for you.”

“By creating an environment where you listen to others, hear their concerns and take them on board where possible I think you have a team then that feels involved with the direction you’re taking. This impacts on the atmosphere of a team and the general willingness to get things done. As well as taking on your teams point of view you also have to show conviction in your decisions, understand your brief and what you need to do to increase efficiencies, streamline processes and make the system work effectively.”

He concluded: “For everyone here today my tip would be to listen to all advice, decide what the best pieces are for you and then use them to benefit you in achieving your goals for the organisation.”

Mr Maher delivered an hour-long talk to the attendees with an open questions and answers session at the end.

Speaking about the Leaders Programme, Timmy O’Dwyer, Vice President, Global Parts Operations and Limerick Site Leader for Dell EMC said: “Dell EMC was delighted to collaborate with Limerick Chamber and the University of Limerick on this exciting programme in 2017 to support the growth and development ambitions of the mid-west region. The success of the initiative has been great to see. As the programme comes to an end it’s encouraging to see so many participants still actively engaged. The region has responded well to the programme and I hope that we can continue to support the Limerick Chamber in 2018 to develop and nurture future leaders across our region.”

Dr James Ring, CEO, Limerick Chamber, said: The Regional Leaders’ Programme, organised with the support of Dell EMC and the University of Limerick, has proven to be very popular with the business community in the Mid-West. We’re delighted that on this occasion Bill Maher was able to provide his leadership insights that will inspire our participants to be ambitious and grow their business.”
