The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at UL  is gearing up to welcome some 50 students from around the world who will spend two weeks at its Blas Summer School of Irish Traditional Music and Dance.  Now in its seventeenth year, Blas  is firmly established as one of Ireland’s most prestigious summer schools, offering students the opportunity of one-to-one tution from some of Ireland’s best-known traditional musicians, singers and dancers. This year’s Blas tutors will include Martin Hayes, Iarla O Lionáird, Colin Dunne, Steve Cooney, Dónal Lunny, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Séamus Begley and many more.

Along with tuition and masterclasses, Blas students can expect a whole range of activities, including lectures on Irish traditional music topics, field-trips, sessions, lunchtime and evening concerts, ceilis, and above all, the opportunity to share tunes and partake in sessions with some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians.  Several public events will also take place during Blas, including ‘Idir Dhá Shaol, a Life in Music’, a public interview with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin on Tuesday June 25th,conducted by Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Áine Hensey.  The interview, which is being recorded for broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm, will be illustrated with live music performances from Mícheál on piano, joined by some colleagues at the Irish World Academy. Details of the public events at Blas  are as follows:

Monday June 24th, 5.30pm  – Blas Official Opening by RTÉ lyric fm’s Ellen Cranitch,  Irish World Academy foyer

Tuesday June 25th, 5.00pm – ‘Idir Dhá Shaol’ an interview with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin conducted by Áine Hensey of Raidio na Gaeltacthta (Admission free, all welcome)

Wednesday June 26th, 7pm – Steve Cooney & Tom Doorley in Concert, Theatre One, Irish World Academy, Tickets €8/€5

Thursday June 27th, 5pm – The Francis Roche Memorial Lecture: Professor Breandán Ó Madagáin ‘The Elemental  function of music and magic in the Gaelic tradition of Ireland and Scotland’ . Admission free, all welcome

Thursday July 4th, 8pm – Dónal Lunny, Séamus Begley and John Carty in Concert, Theatre One, Irish World Academy. Tickets €15/€12

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
