The Bloodmill Road Extension has been officially opened by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, marking the completion of a major infrastructure project aimed at promoting sustainable transport options and enhancing connectivity for residents and visitors alike.
The Bloodmill Road Extension Scheme, delivered by Priority Construction Ltd. on behalf of Limerick City and County Council, commenced on 28th October 2024. It opened to the public in March 2025.
The scheme realigns the existing Bloodmill Road to connect with the newly developed link road to the east, significantly improving accessibility to the Educate Together Secondary School, the upcoming Bon Secours private hospital and Medical Diagnostics development, and the Lidl retail unit on the surrounding zoned lands.
The primary aim of the Bloodmill Road Extension Scheme is to encourage sustainable travel options by offering safer and more efficient infrastructure for vulnerable road users. With enhanced Active Travel measures, the project delivers high-quality pedestrian and cyclist facilities, designed to support a shift away from private car use towards walking, cycling, and public transport. As a critical element of the NTA BusConnects Project for Limerick City, the new extension ensures seamless integration with public transport routes, promoting environmentally friendly commuting solutions.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, officially opened the new road and commented, “Solutions to traffic congestion in the broader Castletroy area are a priority in the More for Limerick Mayoral Programme. This project is a key part of the overall solution for those living, working and studying in the area. In only two months, we have already seen the positive impact the Bloodmill Road Extension project it is having on the community. It has improved connectivity to essential services and new developments while also contributing to our long-term vision of a more sustainable Limerick.”
Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon, commented, “The opening of the Bloodmill Road Extension is a fantastic occasion for our community. This project not only enhances our local infrastructure but also demonstrates our commitment to creating a safer, more accessible environment for all residents. It’s bringing positive changes to the locality with improved connectivity and more options for those wishing to leave the car at home.”
Hugh McGrath, Acting Director of Services for Transportation and Mobility, commented on the project’s completion, “The official opening of the Bloodmill Road Extension marks a significant step forward in Limerick’s commitment to sustainable transport. This investment in improved infrastructure directly supports the delivery of enhanced public transport services and facilities in line with the approved BusConnects plans for Limerick City. By providing safe, attractive alternatives for walking, cycling, and public transport, we are promoting a more sustainable and connected future for Limerick.”
The completion of the Bloodmill Road Extension unlocks the development potential of the zoned lands to the east, supporting economic growth and improving transport options for both residents and businesses. The road’s transformation from a rural link to a modern, accessible route exemplifies Limerick’s dedication to building a sustainable urban environment.
