Alliance Medical and Bon Secours Health System have officially opened the new state-of-the-art Bon Secours Diagnostic Imaging Centre in Limerick, representing a major advancement in healthcare provision for patients across the Mid-West region.

The new 944 square metre facility was officially opened by John Kiely, Manager of the Limerick Senior Hurling Team, and marks the first time that PET-CT scanning technology will be available in the Mid-West, significantly enhancing cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning for patients across the region.

Staffed by more than sixty healthcare professionals, including 13 Consultant Radiologists, the centre operates seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, providing patients with enhanced access, faster turnaround times and care closer to home.

Speaking at the official opening, Jason Kenny, CEO, Bon Secours Hospital Limerick, said, ‘The opening of the Bon Secours Diagnostic Imaging Centre is an important milestone and a significant enhancement to the services available across our new hospital campus.  By providing advanced diagnostic services, including the first PET-CT scanner in the region, this partnership with Alliance Medical supports improved access to essential healthcare closer to home, earlier diagnosis and ultimately improved patient outcomes. This investment strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality care and ensures patients across the Mid-West have access to some of the most advanced diagnostic services available.’

Malcolm Banks, Managing Director, Alliance Medical, said, ‘Today marks a major milestone for healthcare in the Mid-West. PET-CT is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools available providing clinicians with critical information that helps guide earlier treatment decisions, particularly in cancer care. We are proud to partner with Bon Secours Health System in delivering this advanced service and ensuring patients have access to leading-edge diagnostics without the need to travel outside the region.’

The introduction of PET-CT services in Limerick will strengthen regional cancer services by enabling patients to access highly specialised imaging locally, reducing travel burdens and supporting more integrated cancer care pathways across the Mid-West.

Officially opening the centre, John Kiely said, ‘As someone deeply connected to the people of Limerick and the wider Mid-West, I am honoured to officially open this exceptional new facility. Access to high-quality healthcare is vital for every community, and this centre will make a real difference to patients and families throughout the region. It is fantastic to see such a significant investment in healthcare here in Limerick.’

The new centre further reinforces Limerick’s growing reputation as a centre of healthcare excellence and innovation, ensuring clinicians have access to the highest quality diagnostic information to support informed treatment decisions and improved patient outcomes.

The official opening event brought together healthcare professionals, community stakeholders, regional leaders and invited guests to celebrate this important advancement in healthcare infrastructure and cancer services for the Mid-West.
