Limerick Gateway to Education launches ‘Books for Change’ campaign as part of Limerick Going for Gold Environmental Project

he campaign is collecting gently used children’s books (ages 3–14) to be shipped to schools and libraries through their charity partner, Read to Grow.

The local charity, Limerick Gateway to Education, has announced the launch of its new initiative, ‘Books for change’, aimed at promoting global literacy and sustainability by donating used children’s books to schools and libraries in Malawi, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda.

Developed as part of the Limerick Going for Gold environmental project, the campaign is collecting gently used children’s books (ages 3–14) to be shipped to schools and libraries through their charity partner, Read to Grow.

The campaign, which runs up to December 2025, is encouraging the people of Limerick to donate children’s books which may go unused, and the project has already received some incredible support. The organisers said, “One school has already donated part of their library, and volunteers are boxing and sorting daily — but we need many more books to meet our goal.”

The Books for Change initiative has set out important campaign goals, including a focus on sustainability, by recycling and reducing waste while reusing the donated books; promoting global literacy by sending the books where they are truly needed; and promoting inclusion by involving the local community in the international campaign.

Donations are currently being accepted at Gateway to Education’s shop at 9 Wickham Street, open Monday to Saturday, 10 am–4:30 pm, and the store room at Unit 1, The Tait Business Centre, Lady’s Lane, which is open Monday to Friday, 10 am–2 pm.

Gateway to Education Limerick is a non-profit, social enterprise

The initiative builds on the success of Gateway to Education’s GiftAbook project, launched in 2019, which has seen more than 12,000 books diverted from landfills to schools in Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, and Malawi.

Carrying out a number of initiatives over the years, Limerick Gateway to Education says, “Our projects over the years focus on Everyone having the right to reach their full potential by Homework Club, Book Voucher Schemes, Employment and more.”

Gateway to Education Limerick is a non-profit, social enterprise created in Limerick in April 2012 to address economic and social barriers to education.
