Bord na Mona visit Limerick Friday May 25 for their Summer of Naturally Driven Challenges

This year Bord na Mona want to help to build a more sustainable future by supporting families and communities around Ireland who are Naturally Driven to Change to get involved in a small challenge this summer that could make a big difference. There are many ways to get involved when thinking about sustainability; Grow Your Own, Recycling & Waste, Energy Efficiency, and Biodiversity. With each one as simple as the next, Bord na Mona visit Limerick will be celebrating these themes in communities around Ireland this summer with a series of fun events. 

Bord na Mona visit Limerick on Friday, May 25 from 12 pm – 2 pm in Arthurs Quay, with the people peddle powered race track challenge, inviting the public to get involved.  The Spin South West Street Crew will also be there with lots more fun activities for the entire family.  People are invited to get involved, learn a little bit about how to make small changes in their own home and to win some great prizes each day. 

To get you started on your own sustainability journey, the team of experts at Bord na Mona have compiled this easy list of tips to get the whole family involved: 

Top tips:

Grow Your Own

• Encourage pollinators! Mix flowers in with your crops, they add a pop of colour and will attract bees and butterflies. Crops like rosemary, fennel, Dill, and basil will all welcome them.
• Get your kids involved in planting and harvesting their own food. Cress or radish is perfect as you’ll see results fast. They’ll be much more likely to eat them and will learn so much.

 

Biodiversity

• Plant a wildflower garden. Help butterflies survive and thrive by adding plants to your garden that will attract and feed them.
• Or build an Insect hotel. They will all appreciate a safe haven and a warm place to hibernate over the winter.

 

Energy Efficiency

• Fridge door usage. Did you know that every 10-20 seconds the door is open it takes 45 minutes to cool to original temperature? Keep it quick and keep it closed!
• Utilise the microwave. A microwave only uses 20% of the energy in a full-size oven and also makes the perfect baked potato!

 

Recycling and Waste

• Shred. While the paper is often recyclable, shredded paper can be a major problem for recycling services as it can be challenging to sort. Did you know that shredded newspaper has multiple uses around the home and garden including kindling for a wood stove, bedding for pets, kitty litter or garden mulch?
• Use a reusable bottle or mug: Did you know that 2.5 billion coffee cups are used and thrown away each year in the UK, that is enough cups to stretch around the world roughly five and a half times but less than 1 in 400 are recycled. You can help reduce these figures by drinking your morning tea or coffee in a reusable mug or your afternoon water in a reusable bottle

 

2018 is set to be a big year for positive changes in the household. Being more environmentally aware and sustainable is something families are becoming more tuned into. However, not everyone knows where to start or how they can play their part but positive change doesn’t always mean big change.
