Active Disability Ireland has announced the re-appointment of Knockainey’s Brian O’Callaghan as Chairperson

Active Disability Ireland has announced the re-appointment of Knockainey’s Brian O’Callaghan as Chairperson, following the successful completion of his first three-year term. His re-election reflects the Board’s confidence in his leadership and its commitment to maintaining the strong momentum achieved over recent years as the organisation continues to champion inclusive physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities across Ireland.

Since taking on the role in 2023, O’Callaghan has overseen a period of significant growth and development for the organisation. Working closely with CEO Brenda O’Donnell, the Board of Directors and the wider team, Active Disability Ireland has continued to strengthen its governance, expand its national programmes, enhance strategic partnerships and reinforce its position as the national voice for inclusive physical activity.

Reflecting on his re-appointment, O’Callaghan said, “It is a tremendous honour to be re-elected by my fellow Board members to serve a second term as Chairperson of Active Disability Ireland. Over the past three years we have built a strong and ambitious organisation, underpinned by excellent governance, an outstanding executive team and a Board committed to making a lasting difference.

“While I am proud of what we have achieved together, I firmly believe the most exciting chapter still lies ahead. We have strengthened our foundations, expanded our reach and developed meaningful partnerships across the disability, sport and health sectors. Now we have an opportunity to build even further, ensuring that every person with a disability has equal opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being physically active.

I want to thank my fellow Directors for the confidence they have placed in me. I also pay tribute to our CEO Brenda O’Donnell and the entire Active Disability Ireland team whose passion, professionalism and dedication continue to drive the organisation forward every day.”

The re-appointment comes at an important time for Active Disability Ireland, with the organisation continuing to deliver its ambitious strategic objectives while broadening the skills and expertise of its Board.

At the recent Annual General Meeting, members also ratified the appointment of three new Directors who bring extensive experience across communications, advocacy, fundraising and commercial development. Pamela Kavanagh joins as Marketing & Communications Director, Gráinne O’Malley has been appointed Fundraising & Business Development Director, and Sarah Joyce takes up the role of Advocacy Director. These appointments reflect Active Disability Ireland’s commitment to strengthening its leadership capacity and supporting the organisation’s long-term ambitions.

O’Callaghan welcomed the new appointments, adding, “It’s fair to say we have gone through a transitional phase over the past 2 years. Strong organisations are built on strong people. I am delighted to welcome Pamela, Gráinne and Sarah to the Board. Each brings a unique perspective and outstanding expertise that will further strengthen our governance and strategic leadership. Their appointment demonstrates our commitment to continually evolving as an organisation and ensuring we have the right skills around the Board table to meet both today’s opportunities and tomorrow’s challenges.”

As he begins his second term, O’Callaghan said his focus will remain firmly on delivering the organisation’s current 2023-2027 strategy, developing the next 5 year strategy, strengthening partnerships across government, sport, health and the disability sector, enhancing financial sustainability, and ensuring Active Disability Ireland continues to be a leading voice in creating an Ireland where people with disabilities have equal opportunities to be active.

Under his continued leadership, Active Disability Ireland enters its next chapter with renewed ambition, an expanded Board, and a clear commitment to influencing positive change through collaboration, innovation and inclusive leadership.
