St Munchin’s College and the wider community of Limerick are in mourning following news of the passing of Bríd Clancy on Monday, January 5.
Remembered as a “passionate and committed educator”, Ms Clancy made a lasting impression on her colleagues as well as the students who were lucky to have her as a teacher.
Leading the tributes, St Munchin’s College Deputy Principal, Ms Shiels said, “Brid was not just a former colleague; she was a dear and cherished friend to both Colm Barrett and I. Even following Brid’s retirement in 2010, our friendship with her remained constant and valued. To us, Brid was kindness personified, genuine, thoughtful, loyal, and an extraordinary friend.
“Brid was an institution in her own right. During her career in St. Munchin’s College, her name became synonymous with determination and leadership.”
Ms Clancy started her career at the Municipal Technical Institute before becoming the first female teacher to take up a role at an all-boys secondary school in St Munchin’s College. Her vocation as a teacher and mentor went beyond her career as Ms Shiels says Ms Clancy “continued to give generously of herself in the years that followed” her retirement in 2010.
Ms Shiels added, “As a school community, St Munchin’s College is profoundly grateful for the inspirational legacy Brid has left behind. As her friends, Colm and I will miss her terribly. Brid was warm, loving, and steadfast, standing beside both of us, often simultaneously through marriages, the births of our children, family celebrations such as Holy Communions, and the passing of loved ones.”
In a post shared on social media, many people have paid tribute to Ms Clancy, with one saying, “Rest in Peace Bríd. Lovely & fitting tribute. I was in her first Irish class in 1978 and she was a real ground breaker. Great teacher and a lovely kind lady.”
Another said, “May she rest in peace in god’s heavenly kingdom. The late Brid Clancy taught me in the Municipal Technical Institute back in the early 1970’s a great teacher she was and helped you in any way she could to help you strive to become better through your education.”
Ms Shiels said Bríd Clancy is remembered fondly by many past students, saying, “She was a passionate and committed educator, and in recent years, I have met countless past pupils whose families had been helped by Brid in times of need, often in ways that were never known publicly. Brid never sought praise or recognition, she helped simply because she had a deeply kind and generous heart.”
