Limerick city Tidy Towns recently won Gold for the first time ever at the national SuperValu Tidy Town awards. Pictured are Maura O’Neill and Helen O’Donnell of Limerick City Tidy Towns at the awards.

Housed in the old tobacco and snuff factory on Wickham Street, Limerick City, Cahill’s Tea has been awarded the Limerick City Tidy Towns Bi-Monthly Award following a nomination from a member of the public.

Serving the people of Limerick since 1870, Cahill’s is a historical building with equally intriguing storefront and signage, for which it has been awarded this month’s award.

Maura O’Neill, Limerick City Tidy Towns, said, “We were delighted to receive a recommendation from a member of the public to present one of our awards to this beautiful little gem of a shop on Wickham Street, with its original external traditional signage and internal shelving and counter-top perfectly preserved from its days as a tobacco and snuff factory.”

The Limerick City Tidy Towns representative said the design of the front of the store plays an “important part” in maintaining Limerick’s retail history as the world around it has changed.

She said, “Given the amount of historic shop frontages that have been replaced by plastic modern signage, it is a joy to see this one so beautifully maintained and remaining an important part of Limerick’s built retail heritage”.

Housed in the old tobacco and snuff factory on Wickham Street, Limerick, Cahill’s has served the people of Limerick since 1870, and the shop now offers a carefully selected range of teas sourced in tea gardens and plantations in China, India, Ceylon and Japan.

Cahills Tea is Limerick City Tidy Town’s fifth winner for 2025 and will be in with a chance to be their Overall Winner for 2025, along with Crew Brewing Company, who won their Jan-Feb award, Mike O’Connell Menswear, who won in March-April, Katie Daly’s Heritage Pub, who won in May-June and our July-August winner, Richmond Terrace.

Limerick City Tidy Towns reminded the public that it is possible to nominate a store for the award, saying, “If you wish to nominate a business in the city for an award or indeed to volunteer with Limerick City Tidy Towns, they meet every Sunday morning at 11 am at the corner of Thomas Street and O’Connell Street, and on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm outside the White House during summer months.”
