Carolin Widmann performs Mendelssohn with the Irish Chamber Orchestra

Carolin Widmann performs Mendelssohn’s much-loved Violin Concerto Op. 64 with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at University Concert Hall, Limerick on Wednesday, November 15 at 8 pm.

Mendelssohn’s concerto truly demonstrates the charm of the violin, and the entire work overflows with beautiful melodies and poetic sentiment. It is the final sparking jewel in Mendelssohn’s very considerable crown.

Carolin also performs Jörg Widmann’s reworking of Mendelssohn’s magical Wedding March. Paraphrase was a special commission by world-renowned architect, Daniel Liebeskind for his daughter’s wedding. Carolin performed it at the wedding last year and will play it once more in Limerick and Dublin.

Carolin dazzled ICO audiences with her virtuosity, last year.  She regularly performs with major European orchestras with distinguished conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Riccardo Chailly, Sir Roger Norrington, Vladimir Jurowski, Marek Janowski, and Pablo Heras-Casado. Being Musician of the Year at the International Classical Music Awards in 2013, Carolin’s performance is much anticipated.

The final Mendelssohn offering in this MOSTLY MENDELSSOHN programme is his hugely popular ‘Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, which, when performed by the ICO, completely captures the magic and frivolity in the ethereal world Shakespeare created.

Schubert’s iconic Symphony No. 9, was championed by Mendelssohn and draws the evening to a climactic conclusion.  The Great C Symphony was a radical departure from the small-scale charm of Schubert’s earlier classical symphonies.  This high-spirited performance will enthrall listeners, drawing them along from the first noble theme through to the last joyous note.

MOSTLY MENDELSSOHN with the Irish Chamber Orchestra takes place at University Concert Hall, Limerick and tickets are available on www.irishchamberorchestra.com and cost €25, concessions €22, and €10 for students.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
