Carolin Widmann brings the Irish Chamber Orchestra to UCH

The Irish Chamber Orchestra will perform Widmann’s Mendelssohn under the direction of Carolin Widmann this Thursday, November 10 at 8pm in the University Concert Hall, Limerick.

Jörg Widmann, Principal Conductor has had to cancel his November concerts in Ireland due to unforeseen circumstances but his sister, violinist Carolin Widmann, who is a featured soloist for the concerts, steps into his shoes directing this delightful programme of prodigious works by Mendelssohn.

Carolin Widmann’s effervescent tone and delicate but assured sensibility imparts buoyancy to the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor. Written at just 13, this Concerto is a remarkable fulfilling and mature work that show a composer with emotional insight far beyond his years and Widmann’s scorching delivery will not disappoint. Mendelssohn’s sparkling String Symphonies offer an amazing treasure chest of delights. No. 5 is deliciously bite-sized arguing its way through a fertile field of merry movements and atmospheric, thoughtful andantes. Fascinated by yodeling all things Swiss, Mendelssohn conveys a trip to the Alps in No. 9 – another brilliant and masterful achievement for a 14-year old.

Carolin Widmann demonstrates her true versatility, performing her brother Jörg’s Etudes 1-3 which are virtuosic, full of texture and character.  Jörg Widmann’s scheduled Aria will be replaced by Nimbus for String Orchestra composed by Cork-born, Sam Perkin for the ICO and will be directed by ICO Leader, Katherine Hunka. Sam is a gifted composer and is currently studying at the Conservatoire in Lyon, France, one of the leading music colleges in the world.
