Classic Performances at Castleconnell Autumn Concert Series

Castleconnell Autumn Concert Series

The first of four classical music performances in the annual Castleconnell Autumn Concert Series will take place on Tuesday 25th August at 8pm.

Details of the 10th annual series have been announced by the Arts Office of Limerick City & County Council and Castleconnell Concert Committee member Pat Burke, supported by the Arts Council, Limerick 2020 and Music Network.

All Saint’s Church will once again host the Series, which begins later this month with pianist Stuart O’Sullivan, and cellist Péter Sebestyén performing Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.

The Series continues at 8pm on Tuesday September 29th when the Esposito Quartet bring to life the string compositions of Joseph Haydn, Samuel Barber, Philip Glass: and Ludwig V. Beethoven.
On Tuesday October 13 at 8pm the French-based Zaïde Quartet, regarded as one of Europe’s finest young string quartets, will perform the music Shostakovich, Mozart and Bartók.

The final concert of the Series takes place on Tuesday November 17 at 8pm when Soprano Sylvia O’Brien, cellist Christopher Marwood and pianist Michael McHale come together in an unusual combination to perform ‘A Romantic Voice’.  The programme will include works for soprano, cello and piano by Messiaen, Berlioz, deFalla, Andre Previn; Fauré’s Cello Sonata in D minor Op.109 and solo piano works by Phillip Hammond and Schubert.

“Our aim in presenting these concerts is to give the people of Limerick the opportunity to enjoy live classical music, performed by highly skilled musicians at two venues that are both intimate and local,” commented Sheila Deegan, Limerick Arts Officer.

“As Limerick prepares its bid for the designation of European Capital of Culture 2020, the ongoing commitment by local communities to quality programming is testament to the passion there is for culture in Limerick. For the past decade audiences have been drawn to Castleconnell, an Edwardian village with a triangular street pattern, to the beautiful and historical All Saint’s Church for an Autumn Series of Concerts,” she added.

Commenting on the opening concert of the Series, Pat Burke of the Castleconnell Concert Committee said: “We are delighted to welcome Stuart O’Sullivan and Peter Sebestyen, who have been collaborating together for several years. Stuart began his career in Limerick as a student at Villiers School, where John A. Ruddock, Headmaster and founder of the Limerick Music Association supported and nurtured his talent.”
