Castleconnell Boat Club Rowing Event Has Record-Breaking Number of Clubs and Competitors

Castleconnell Boat Club welcomed a record 400 crews to its recently renovated location at World’s End, County Limerick last weekend, for the first official competition since the National Championships in July.

The club has recently built a new boathouse, which can accommodate and store over 50 boats. The older clubhouse, which was badly flooded two years ago, has welcomed the addition of floodwalls, and the interior has been painted and renovated for use as a gym, with rowing machines and static bikes. The club has continued to see a surge in interest in the sport, and membership is at an all-time high.

Castleconnell President Owen Silke commended “We were delighted to see such a great turnout at the first Head of the season, and I would like to thank everyone who contributed.”

“These events take an immense amount of planning to be both successful and safe, and I’m proud that we managed to deliver on both. Feedback from all clubs has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s a great way to start the season.”

The Bull and Bears race is becoming an annual highlight of the Castleconnell Head – it takes the 8 best pairs of the day and divides them into two 8s, for a straight 3K race. Winners took home the 2017 Bull and Bears rowing top, and it’s a fun way for clubs to get to know each other better.

Castleconnell Boat Club was founded 30 years ago and is situated in a unique and picturesque location on the banks of the river Shannon in the village of Castleconnell, Co. Limerick.
