Intergenerational connection as Garryowen Day Care Centre welcomes a visit from Castletroy College

Students from Castletroy College visited The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s (The ASI) Garryowen Day Centre as part of the ‘Creating a Dementia-Inclusive Generation’ programme. The initiative aims to educate young people about dementia, reduce stigma, and promote inclusivity.

The visit involved sharing homemade baked goods, stories, and songs with attendees, fostering meaningful intergenerational connections between the students and the service users

Alison McCarthy, National Activities Coordinator at The ASI, commented, “Intergenerational engagement is incredibly powerful. It breaks down barriers, reduces loneliness, and creates a more compassionate society.”

Patricia Parcell, the Garryowen Day Care Manager, said that the clients had a “blast” and that it was “lovely to have young people in the centre.”

Through an engaging online course and hands-on experiences, students in the programme learn about brain health, ageism, and the lived experience of those with dementia, building empathy and understanding. With 1 in 3 young people knowing someone living with dementia, programmes like this are more vital than ever in building awareness and community.

Garryowen Day Care Centre provides dementia-specific, person-centred care in a warm, welcoming, and safe environment.
