As the festival enters its sixth edition in Limerick City 3rd-5th April, this initiative reaffirms Catalyst’s commitment to championing underrepresented voices in filmmaking, a significant achievement for a grassroots festival dedicated to fostering inclusivity in the screen industry.

“The Catalyst Bursary made it possible for me to collaborate with an incredible crew and bring my vision to life in a way I never could have alone,” said Nicola Leddy, director of Boobs (2024’s Bursary Award Winner) “As my debut funded short film, this is a crucial calling card—proof of what I can accomplish with the right support.”

Launched in 2024, the Catalyst Bursary €10,000 Award was created to support emerging and early career documentary filmmakers from diverse backgrounds, providing financial assistance to help develop their projects and careers. Open to Irish-based filmmakers in ROI and NI, the award aligns with the festival’s mission to promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion both on and off the screen.

Festival Director and Founder Dr. Susan Liddy expressed her enthusiasm for the award’s return: “For a small festival, continuing to offer this bursary is no small feat—but it’s absolutely vital. Catalyst exists to amplify voices that are too often unheard in the film industry. By providing this support, we’re not just acknowledging talent—we’re actively helping to break down barriers and create opportunities. We’re immensely proud to be able to do this for a second year.”

Since its inception, Catalyst International Film Festival has carved out a distinctive place in the Irish film landscape, showcasing films that challenge perspectives and celebrate a broad spectrum of storytelling.

The Bursary Award underscores the festival’s dedication to meaningful change, ensuring that new and diverse voices are nurtured and empowered. Applications for the 2025 Bursary Award will open soon, with details available on the festival’s website. Deadline for submissions for the Catalyst Bursary Award is fast approaching on 11th March 2025 – and entry is completely free of charge.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
