Catherine Penny – Limerick Portrait Artist
Catherine Penny is a Limerick artist specialising in charcoal portraits. She attended the Limerick School of Art and Design, where she achieved a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Printmaking. In her years there she perfected her technique and frequently turned to portraiture as a main source of inspiration. She then went on to study photography in the Limerick College of Further Education. This intensive two year course was a great inspiration to her work, helping her to see beauty in the world and compelling her to recreate it. Her art turned more to aesthetics, to revealing the individual character, charisma and beauty in a person’s face. Since she was a young child, drawing portraits of people and animals has inspired her and through her time at college it has been a recurring theme, enticing her to draw people and to try to capture their essence in charcoal.
For the last two years she has been working successfully as a portrait artist, taking commissions for images for weddings, anniversary’s, Christmas and other occasions. She now combines her love of the photographic image with her innate talent for drawing. Working from photographs, she produces a carefully drawn photo-realistic image. Working this way she can spend hours meticulously drawing each detail to make the image come alive, without the need for the subject, be they human or a beloved pet, to have to pose for hours. Charcoal is her preferred medium as it creates high contrast images with deep black shadows. When not busy drawing, she also plays music, prints t-shirts and photographs the world around her. She welcomes commissions and can be contacted via her Facebook page www.facebook.com/CatherinePennyPortraits
