After 38 years in journalism, the RTÉ Mid West Correspondent, Cathy Halloran, is set to retire, closing the door on a stellar career where the veteran journalist became known for her compassionate reporting and a familiar face for Limerick, the region, and the nation for 38 years, with 31 of those years covering the Mid West.

A Dublin native, Halloran began her career in the 1980s with The Farmer Magazine before moving on to the Connacht Tribune in Galway; in 1987 Cathy joined RTÉ News covering both radio and TV news and having the opportunity to cover some landmark events such as the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Industry at Dublin Castle in 1990.

In 1993, the reporter was appointed RTÉ Mid West Correspondent, a role she held for more than 3 decades, making her a familiar face to the people of Limerick and the surrounding region as she reported with distinction. Reflecting on her time in the role, Cathy told RTÉ that it had been a “roller coaster of a career” which has given her a “Page One Lead on the stories making history and impacting the lives of citizens and their families and communities across this very busy part of the country”.

Halloran’s reporting covered a wide range of issues, many of which will hold close to the hearts of the people of Limerick, from the challenges facing University Hospital Limerick to stories which showed both the joy and resilience of the people across the Mid West Region, speaking about her work, she said, “There were also the stories of joy and those of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”

Making the announcement on Twitter, Cathy said, “Today, some news of my own. I have decided to exit my working life in RTÉNews & retire early. A massive thanks to so many who have shared their stories Princes, Presidents & People—an honour & thanks so much to my talented colleagues, especially the team in the regions”

All at I Love Limerick wish Cathy the very best in her retirement.
