Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl welcomed distinguished guests to Leinster House for a special charity dinner in aid of Cliona’s Foundation, a national organisation providing vital financial support to families of children with life-limiting illnesses.
The event, which drew leaders from across Irish society, raised awareness of Cliona’s Foundation, a remarkable charity helping to cover essential non-medical expenses during their most challenging times.
Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl opened the event with a warm welcome and praised the work of Cliona’s Foundation, recognising the charity’s ongoing support for families dealing with the financial burden that often accompanies serious illness.
“I was delighted to host the second annual dinner for Cliona’s Foundation last Thursday at Leinster House. It was a wonderful evening, and I would like to thank the very special panel guests Sarah Lavin, Paul McNeive and James Nesbitt as well as MC Brendan Courtney for their meaningful insights about their lives and challenges they have personally overcome as well as the many donors who support the foundation. The work Cliona’s does is very important. Families caring for a seriously sick child should never have to worry about finances when fighting for their child’s life. I will continue to advocate for Cliona’s very worthy cause.”
The evening was highlighted by the presence of three exceptional guests: Olympian Sarah Lavin, celebrated actor James Nesbitt, and renowned author and motivational speaker Paul McNeive. Each shared inspiring stories, adding a personal and powerful touch to the night. The lively atmosphere was guided by TV presenter and fashion designer Brendan Courtney, who served as Master of Ceremonies.
The panel discussion provided guests with powerful insights into overcoming adversity, resilience, and the strength of community. Sarah Lavin, who represented Ireland in the Tokyo Olympics, spoke about the perseverance required to achieve her dreams, drawing parallels to the determination families show in caring for their sick children. James Nesbitt reflected on the importance of giving back and supporting causes that resonate deeply with people. Paul McNeive, a double amputee and best-selling author, shared his personal journey of triumphing over life’s obstacles, leaving the audience inspired by his courage and positivity.
The evening also shone a light on the incredible work of Cliona’s Foundation, which was established in 2007 to assist families facing the hidden costs of caring for a seriously ill child—such as travel, accommodation, and other essential expenses. By alleviating this financial pressure, Cliona’s Foundation allows families to focus on what truly matters: caring for their children.
Cliona’s Foundation co-founder Brendan Ring expressed his gratitude for the generosity and solidarity shown. “We are deeply thankful to the Ceann Comhairle and all those in attendance. The support we’ve received this evening will go a long way in making a real difference to the lives of families who are facing unimaginable challenges.”
The evening concluded with a resounding message of hope, compassion, and community spirit, reinforcing the importance of supporting families of seriously ill children. All support of Cliona’s will directly benefit families across Ireland, helping with a wide range of non-medical costs, from accommodation and transport to household bills and other unexpected expenses.
