Centra Patrickswell has made significant sustainability upgrades in its store, by investing €160,000 in sustainable initiatives over the last year.

As part of the significant store investment, Centra Patrickswell has incorporated a number of sustainability upgrades to enhance the efficiency of the store. This includes the upgrading of refrigerators and freezers and the installation of LED lighting and Electric Shelf Edge Labels (eSELs). In addition to this, 145 solar panels have been installed at the store in the last few months, equating to saving 40,000Kwh worth of energy.

Supplementing these energy efficiencies, the store offers organic and eco-offerings to the forefront for customers, providing an enhanced organic section, loose fruit and vegetables, eco- friendly range a reduced to clear section, a sustainability champion member of staff, and segregated recycling bins.

Centra Patrickswell is also very active in the local community, sponsoring local community groups including providing coffee mornings for Action Breast Cancer and Ukraine.

In addition to the investment made by the store, Centra Patrickswell received a grant from the Musgrave Sustainability Fund. The €25 million fund, created by Musgrave Group, of which Centra is a part of, is aimed at empowering retailers to achieve net zero carbon by 2040. Supported by the fund, to date, over 245 Centra stores have availed of the fund which has achieved a reduction of 2,017 tonnes of carbon, which is the equivalent of planting 366,800 trees or powering 1,000 homes per year

In the Republic of Ireland, Musgrave Sustainability Fund has committed €2O million to sustainability initiatives across its stores. Stores across Ireland have implemented select sustainability initiatives based on each store’s needs and set-up, including upgrading freezers and refrigeration units, LED lighting retrofit, solar panels, and electronic shelf edge labels (eSEL).

David Hodkinson, Store Owner of Centra Patrickswell said, “At Centra Patrickswell, we recognise the vital role we all play as a business, and as a community in combating climate change. As part of a significant investment in our store we are actively reducing our environmental footprint by installing solar panels, adopting energy-efficient solutions like LED lighting and electing a sustainability champion. Our commitment to sustainability will continue to evolve, ensuring ongoing improvements across the store. I would like to thank all our staff at Centra Patrickswell said for all of their support in ensuring we operate an efficient and sustainable store.”

Luke Hanlon, Managing Director of Centra said: “Our stores are at the heart of communities around Ireland, and we are proud that our network of Centra retailers has shown real passion and enthusiasm to continue to lead by example and implement sustainability measures.  We are seeing constant efficiencies and improvements being made across our retail network.  Consumers want us to do more, and we are focused on doing this and working with our retail partners to make every community a sustainable community.
