Zambian-Irish rapper Denise Chaila has just released her latest music video for her single “Chaila” on Friday, June 12. This is the artist’s second hit in 2020, following after her previous song “Down”.

The Limerick-raised performer has been a part of the Limerick music scene since 2012. Chaila has made multiple appearances with the Rusangano Family, lending her voice to their song “Isn’t Dinner Nice”. In 2019, she released her first EP “Duel Citizenship” and has skyrocketed in popularity, even landing herself a spot as one of the 13 Irish Acts to Know in 2020 on Paste. Now, with “Chaila”, the talented rapper continues to produce powerful, flowing lyrics.

The single might contain Chaila’s name, but it is an anthem for reclaiming identity. In it, she spells out her name and kids around with several mispronunciations she has heard before. It’s a song about empowerment, about showing yourself in your truest form possible, about fully embracing who you are. With many chaotic events taking place across the world, such as the remaining Covid-19 effects and the recent Black Lives Matter protests happening everywhere, this song brings confidence to anyone questioning who they are or what they feel. The repetition in “Chaila” embraces pride in one’s name and heritage and to carry that forward as far as you possibly can, and there is no doubt that Denise Chaila is doing just that.

@narolane_ presents: C H A I L A ? music video out today! ・・・ It’s strange to hold the joy of release with the grief of loss and recognition of pain. Well. Do it and be honest about it in public anyway. But in the spirit of vulnerability: this is my first music video and I’m deeply proud of this creation and the people who dreamed it to life with me. The day of this shoot was special. It was on Valentine’s Day. From the moment we left Limerick til the moment I returned, the day became a love letter. One dedicated to a version of myself that doesn’t exist anymore, a version of me that doesn’t exist yet, and whatever combination of both I was that day. I cried and danced and took up space. Unapologetically. In community. I carried my family histories, my conflicts, my anxieties, my confidence— I shared and let go of a lot that day. And was held and Seen. From styling to choreo to set design and shooting; I sat down and dreamed a world with people I’m in awe of. People who say my name carefully and with love. Whose names I honour in return. I’m glad I get to share that with you. Cause if you’ve been around these last few weeks; you also know what a deep wound this came from and how much fire is in this joy. If you see me, see it all. As I see you. Say my name. – – – ??? The music video for Chaila was produced by Collective Films, recorded in February 2020 and directed by Mark Logan. The single, which was released on Friday, May 29, has brought fantastic lyricism and rhythmic beats since its debut. It will definitely be a prominent part of Chaila’s first-ever album.

On the artist’s social media pages, Chaila wrote, “This is my first music video and I’m deeply proud of this creation and the people who dreamed it to life with me.” She goes on to say that the filming took place on Valentine’s Day, making it like a special “love letter” to her past, present and future self.

I cried and danced and took up space. Unapologetically. In community. I carried my family histories, my conflicts, my anxieties, my confidence— I shared and let go of a lot that day,” Chaila said.
