Run for Fun 2025 created a family-friendly atmosphere kicking off the Regeneron Great Limerick Run weekend

More than 2,000 primary school children embraced the joy of movement today as they took part in the Children’s Run for Fun 2025 on the grounds of the University of Limerick. The event provided a safe, inclusive, and energising environment for young people to get active, supported every step of the way by cheering parents, guardians, grandparents, and family members.
Now the largest children’s running event of its kind in Ireland, the Children’s Run for Fun is all about inspiring kids to experience the positive benefits of healthy habits and physical activity from an early age. Divided into four starts to cater to children of all abilities and age groups, the event ensured that every child had the opportunity to participate at a level that was both fun and achievable.
The first wave of the day was dedicated to children using wheelchairs and walkers, receiving a powerful ovation from the crowd as they made their way along the track. The following starts welcomed children from Junior Infants up to Sixth Class, with distances ranging from 1KM to 2KM, creating an atmosphere full of energy, excitement, and encouragement.
The Children’s Run for Fun is proudly held in association with Limerick City & County Council and supports our charity partner, Cliona’s Foundation, helping families with seriously sick children across Ireland.
Race Director Sliabh Wells said, “This event is about more than just running – it’s about confidence, inclusion, and creating joyful memories. Seeing children cross the finish line with huge smiles, cheered on by their loved ones, is what makes this so special. We are proud to offer a space where children of all abilities can get active in a safe and supportive setting.”
“A huge thank you goes to Limerick City & County Council, whose continued support makes this event possible. Their belief in promoting youth activity and community wellbeing is central to what we do.”
This year, the Children’s Run for Fun also welcomed Cliona’s Foundation as its official charity partner, shining a light on the important work being done to support families of seriously ill children in Ireland.
The Children’s Run for Fun leads into the Regeneron Great Limerick Run, taking place on Sunday, May 4th. With over 18,000 people taking part in the event across the weekend, it’s a clear demonstration of Limerick’s ongoing commitment to health, community, and participation at all levels.
