Now part of a Limerick Christmas tradition, the Christmas Vintage Toy Window will return once again to Limerick City on December 5

Limerick’s beloved Christmas Vintage Toy Window is set to fill Limerick City with nostalgia and some Christmas spirit, as the display will once again transform the window of Studio Saol, 8 Sarsfield Street, from December 5.

Curated by Randel Hodkinson, Paul O brien, and Lorna Hodkinson, what is now a Limerick Christmas tradition, will see one of the city’s windows transformed into a sparkling trip through generations, bringing toys from as early as the 1890s to a memory-filled Christmas display.

The idea first came to life in 2021 after conversations about childhood Christmas presents revealed that, between Randel Hodkinson’s remarkable collection and the Waldron family collection, there was enough history and memory to fill an entire vintage display. Since then, the window has become a cherished local tradition and has seen crowds from across Limerick and beyond coming to the city to experience the display.

This year’s window again features an extraordinary range of items, with the majority of the collection coming from three generations of carefully stored toys.

The organisers said, “We came together at Christmas last year and decided to create something magical for the city by displaying a large collection of wonderful toys stretching back to the 1890s. Due to many requests from the public, we have decided to set up the window again this year.

“Randel’s father, Aubrey,  had carefully boxed and stored away three generations of toys at the family home, and these make up over 75 per cent of the collection. The star of the collection is an original Mickey Mouse toy, which had been given as a present, in the early 1930s, by Randel’s grandfather, to his niece, Eva Cremin. Randel inherited this rare toy from Eva.”

The curators extend warm thanks to Studio Saol, the Shannon Foynes Port Company, and Deirdre Power for photography, as preparations continue for the launch of this year’s window on Friday, December 5.
