Limerick’s Cian Gorey recently competed in HYROX Amsterdam to fundraise for Impact For Mental Health through Race for Impact, following the tragic passing of his close friend and Thomond Rugby player, Jack Cosgrave, last February.

Speaking with Hyrox NL, BE, & LU, Cian said, “ Last February, my best friend passed away due to mental health. I just wanted to do something to honour him.”

Cian became the Race for Impact’s top individual fundraiser ever, raising €6,156 while racing in memory of his best friend, Cian said, “Jack was like a little brother to me. I’ve known him since I was five, since I started school. He was always a supportive and happy person, but ultimately, we didn’t know how deep his problems lay, and that led to what happened.”

Race for Impact helped Cian turn his HYROX competition into a force for change by supporting high-performance charities tackling the world’s toughest problems.

Speaking about how the memory of his friend motivated, Cian said, “ It’s something we always dreamed about doing or said we’d do, but we’d always procrastinated it. So I think when he passed, this is just my way of honouring him.

“I’m grateful to be here with the support from Race for Impact and Hyrox themselves. He didn’t care what people thought. He would do it as best he can and as long as he was happy with his effort, that’s all that mattered. So I want to honour that today and race like Jack would. As long as I’m happy with my result, I know he’ll be proud, and the family will be proud too.”

About the cause supported, Race for Impact says, “Despite the scale of the need, mental health remains drastically underfunded. Vetted charities in this fund are working with local communities to deliver effective, evidence-based treatments at scale — bringing hope and care to people who would otherwise go without.

“Our Mental Health Fund supports high-impact organisations providing life-changing support for people currently underserved by conventional healthcare systems.”

Thanks to the generosity of his supporters, Cian became the highest fundraiser on record for Race for Impact to date, raising more than €6,200, with donations continuing to come in.

Cian said, “Jack was like a little brother to me. I’ve known him since I was five, since I started school. He was always a supportive and happy person, but ultimately, we didn’t know how deep his problems lay, and that led to what happened.
