Historic Civic Reception in Southill

The first civic reception to be held outside Limerick City Hall went ahead last week at Southill Area Centre. Mayor Jim Long presided over the “historic first for Limerick City Council” as Sr.Maura O’Connor of the Southill Family Resource Centre (FRC) was honoured with this reception for their recent success in the All-Island Pride of Place awards. In 2011 the “Health Matters Naturally” Clinic, which is run by Sr.Maura and is part of the Southill FRC, won the national award in the Pride of Place Community Health Initiative Category. ‘This is the first time that Limerick City has been the recipient of first prize in the Pride of Place competition. ‘This recognition of something so positive in our community, which has experienced too many setbacks, has put a smile on faces and renewed hope,’ Sr.Maura tells me. The clinic was set up by Sr. in 2000 with the support of the Mercy Sisters and with ongoing funding from Limerick Regeneration enabling the centre to offer the service for free. ‘This is a great example of what can be achieved when communities and service providers come together and work to identify and respond practically to gaps in service provision and needs that are present in the community’, Brendan Kenny the CEO of Limerick regeneration told me. The project offers a variety of natural and complementary therapies, under the capable hands of Sr. Maura, which has proven to be most beneficial to the local community. Therapies include bio-resonance, reiki, colour therapy and smoking cessation. The mayor and Southill FRC agreed that it was important to hold the event locally, so those who benefit from the service could come together and join a community celebration to mark their achievement. The clinic is open Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 061 440251.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
