Young Limerick artist Claire O’Malley features in major Tokyo exhibition

The prizewinning artwork chosen from this year’s 72nd Texaco Children’s Art Competition entitled ‘The Amazing Tinks’, by 16-year old Limerick student Claire O’Malley, from Catherine McAuley School, was one of four Irish paintings exhibited at the 27th International High School Arts Festival which took place in Tokyo recently.

Sponsored by the International Foundation for Arts and Culture (IFAC), the International High School Arts Festival is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious exhibitions to take place in Tokyo annually. Described as ‘a showcase for the world’s best young artistic talent’, it featured the top 500 artworks selected from up to 15,000 works submitted by students worldwide aged from 15 to 18 years.

Other winning artworks from this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition which were displayed at the National Arts Center in Tokyo were ‘Falling Up’ by Aurianna Hanlon (age 16), from Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny; ‘Sightseeing’ by Cavan student, Anna Towell (18), who attends the University of Galway; and ‘Melting in Malta 2018’ by Down student, Lucy Bishop (16), from Bangor Academy & Sixth Form College.

Claire’s impressive artwork was described by Irish visual artist, curator and educator Pauline O’Connell, who was final adjudicator, as “an acrylic paint and wool collage combined in a confident and imaginative work. The dog, rendered in soft chenille wool, introduces a rich tactile quality, while its proud stance and turned head bring personality and presence to the composition.”

‘The Amazing Tinks’ by 16-year-old Claire O’Malley, a Catherine McAuley School student, claimed first prize in Category G of the Texaco Children’s Art Competition, a section reserved for artists with additional needs.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsorship in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first competition held in 1955.
