PHOTOS – Cliona’s Foundation Break the World Marathon Relay Record

Published

on

On Sunday, January 11 over 105 runners from all over Limerick came together at the University of Limerick in an attempt to break the World Marathon Relay Record and enter the Guinness World Record books. Gary O’Hanlon, a well known athlete from Clonliffe Harriers kicked off the relay marathon. The team broke the record by running the relay in 1 hour, 56 minutes and 54 seconds. It was an amazing achievement by all of the runners and supporters involved.

The previous record stood at two hours and 10 minutes and 52 seconds, which means runners had to average 74 seconds per lap to break the record.

Each runner completed a 400m lap of the running track in UL. The final 105th lap was a group event.

This event is the brainchild of Derek Casey from Limerick Brakes, who sponsored this event.

Derek tells me, “I am delighted that all proceeds will go to a local charity, Cliona’s Foundation, who provide financial support to families with a seriously ill child. This is a wonderful achievement and we are so delighted that the record was broken in Limerick.”

People can still donate money www.mycharity.ie/event/clionas_foundation_relay_marathon.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
