Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme starter kit to aid expectant Limerick parents
Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme is spearheaded by VOICE Ireland in partnership with University Maternity Hospital Limerick
Families in Limerick preparing for new baby arrival can now apply for a complimentary cloth nappy starter kit, thanks to the Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme

This initiative, spearheaded by VOICE Ireland in partnership with University Maternity Hospital Limerick and the local authorities of Limerick City and County, Clare, and Tipperary, is designed to help families transition to reusable cloth nappies.
Eligible antenatal patients attending University Maternity Hospital Limerick, will receive a starter pack that includes 10 premium reusable cloth nappies, 12 washable cloth wipes, A waterproof storage bag for used nappies, Eco-friendly absorbent inserts made from bamboo, cotton, and hemp, and Easy-to-follow instructions for use and care.
This initiative comes in response to the growing environmental impact of disposable nappies. Ireland currently sends around one million disposable nappies to landfill each day. According to the EPA’s 2022 Household Waste Characterisation report, nappies make up 10% of kerbside residual waste—amounting to over 75,000 tonnes annually.
Reusable cloth nappies offer a more sustainable solution, with a 25% lower carbon footprint over their lifecycle compared to disposables, as highlighted in a 2023 life cycle analysis by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer at Limerick City and County Council commented on the incentive, “Making the switching to cloth nappies is a meaningful change that can have a big environmental impact. We encourage families across the region to apply and give them a try.”
Eileen Ronan, Director of Midwifery at University Maternity Hospital Limerick, stated that, “We are delighted to support this initiative across the Mid-West region. It is a practical way for families to reduce waste and embrace sustainability. It provides the opportunity for families to make the eco-conscious choice while at the same time saving money.”
VOICE Ireland added, “We created the Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme to inspire families who may never have considered reusable nappies to give them a try. Modern cloth nappies are soft, breathable, colourful, and easy to use.”
Additional support to help parents get started with Cloth Nappies, is available from the Cloth Nappy Library who are offering FREE online workshops and one-to-one guidance.. These sessions will help families understand the different types of cloth nappies available, how to use and wash them, and provide ongoing support throughout the journey.
