Colbert Station is just a 10-minute walk from the city and serves Limerick with rail links and frequent services from Dublin Cork and Galway by train. Bus services are also provided by Bus Eireann to all of Ireland’s major cities from the station.

The Colbert Station redevelopment was proposed in 2014 by Bus Eireann who highlighted four elements of the train station to be developed further, such as overhead and basement developments for commercial use.

Bus Eireann applied for permission to build a new bus station north of the train station, interlinking the bus station to the train station internally.

The Bus and Train station integration will provide a single large concourse and extend the existing concourse into the new bus area.

Potential 5 storeys overhead development is currently being discussed where taxi drop-offs and bus bays will be available. Ground floor and first-floor offices will also be included.

A plaza will provide a new civic space for Limerick City and enhance the city centre location while incorporating a hub for all public transport serving Limerick.

The traffic movement for buses will enter from Roxborough Road and exit onto Parnell Street. There will be an extended canopy over the bus bays extending to 9m from the front line of the bus bays, this will provide shelter for passengers.

A total of 326 new car spaces are to be expected along with room for 264 bicycles in a new car park.

The Colbert Stationredevelopment improvements will modernise the bus station and will encourage the public to use the more environmentally friendly mode of transport such as public transport.

With approximately 2,500 passengers per day already using the services available there is no doubt with significant improvements the desire to use public transport will only increase from there.
