The Colleen Bawn Trials will be taking place August 14th – 23rd at Shannon Rowing Club Limerick.

An Immersive Theatrical Experience, directed by Joan Sheehy, devised in collaboration with John Greenwood, Sonic Artist, Anne-Marie Morrin, Visual Artist with – lighting and videography by Art O’Laoire.

A re-telling of Limerick’s most famous story, The Colleen Bawn Trials revisits the historic facts behind the story of fifteen year old Ellen Hanley whose body was washed ashore in the Shannon Estuary in 1820. The high profile trial that sent her murderers to the gallows featured the Liberator, Daniel O’Connell as defence layer and the dramatic story has inspired many versions of the story through the Boucicault play, The Colleen Bawn, a 1911 film of the same name, the opera, Lily of Killarney, and the novel, Death Sails the Shannon as well as The Collegians.

The iconic Shannon Rowing Club is the setting for this quintessential Limerick story – as theatre maker Joan Sheehy weaves fact and fiction to create a unique theatrical event. Audiences will move through the historic building on Sarsfield’s Bridge, experiencing the true story of the Colleen Bawn through dramatic scenes, stunning visuals and a haunting soundscape.

Directed by Joan Sheehy and created in collaboration with visual artist, Anne Marie Morrin and sonic artist, John Greenwood, this production stars Malcolm Adams, Gene Rooney, Patrick Ryan, Shane Whisker and four members of Limerick Youth Theatre, Laura Carey, Aiden Kelly, James Lillis and Courtney McKeon. Lighting and videography by Art O’Laoire.
