The Con and Annie Kirby Memorial takes place in Limerick Greyhound Stadium each year. This year, it is on Saturday 4th April. This event carries a total prize of €160,000 and is the richest event ever staged at an Irish Greyhound Stadium outside of Shelbourne Park. The event is sponsored by JP & Noreen McManus. This year is going to be their third year holding this event here in Limerick Greyhound Stadium. The event is named in honour of Noreen`s late parents and reaffirms their commitment to the greyhound industry, particularly in Limerick. Being a fervent GAA family, a novel idea to include 72 clubs from all over Limerick in the event proved a huge success in its debut year and will again feature in 2015.
It offers local GAA Clubs the opportunity to share in a €20,000 nominator’s prize fund, with the Final 6 Greyhounds. Each selected Club is randomly assigned to a Greyhound at the trap draw that takes place before the event begins. As the Clubs’ nominated Greyhound progresses through the competition so does the Club until there are only 6 Greyhounds left linked to 6 Clubs in the final. The overall winning nominator club will receive €10,000 and the fantastic opportunity to hold a fundraising night for their club at Limerick Greyhound Stadium at no cost. The nominator club in second and third position will win €5,000 and €2,000 respectively with the three unplaced nominators winning €1,000 each. The Con and Annie Kirby Memorial ensures only the highest class of young racing talent from across Ireland and the UK will be among the 72 strong fields. The new home of greyhound racing in the city is now in its fifth year of operation on the Dock Road and is the administrative headquarters of governing body, the IGB. It boasts world class facilities for race goers. With the addition of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake as the “richest puppy event in the world” to the venue`s already impressive racing profile. To call the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake a Classic in just its third year would be a slight stretch but a palpable air of expectancy in advance of our opening heats coupled with stunning displays of racing excellence throughout the first round of action confirms that this event, although in its infancy, bears all the hallmarks of a greyhound racing Classic.
It is an event bringing communities with young and old people together for a truly memorable and colourful sporting occasion.
